Domestic Violence Resource Center

Description of Agency:
Serves adults, youth, children, and families who have experienced domestic violence at any time in their lives. Community Counseling Services provide no fee counseling to those adults, youth, children, and families who are experiencing emotional problems.

-There are opportunites to work in settings with either adults, youth, or children depending upon which program is selected. Clients come via a variety of sources, including: self-referrals, DHS referrals, and correctional mandate. There are 32 beds in their shelter with an average length of stay of six weeks.

Requirements:
maturity, preference given to life experience, it is helpful to be familiar with domestic violence issues, must be a people-person who is not afraid of conflict and can maintain good boundaries with clients. Interns should be compassionate, empathetic, ethical, and demonstrate a willingness to ask for help

Specific Schdule Requirements?
Twenty hours per week are required on-site. Flexible scheduling available, clinical supervision meetings are Thursday 9:30am to noon.

Stressors at this Site:
resistance in DHS referrals, correctional mandated clients, and domestic violence offenders

Summary Comments:
A 40-hour training (often scheduled in September) must be completed prior to beginning internship. The site offers opportunity to work with a variety of clients in a supportive environment. The site is easily accessbile by C-Tran and MAX, as well as by auto.
