Research Databases

Through the EBSCOhost Research Databases, the Library provides students with access to a large number of ministry and psychology databases.

These databases can be accessed from anywhere that Internet service is provided and are restricted for use by Western students and faculty only. The User ID and password for these databases are provided in the student handbook and each course’s syllabus.

Academic Search Premier
The world’s largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Premier provides full text for nearly 4,500 publications, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975. Updated daily.

ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials
ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials is the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion. More than 500 journals are indexed annually. The database includes more than 500,000 bibliographic records for journal articles, more than 200,000 essay citations, and more than 400,000 book review citations. Links are provided to more than 200,000 full text articles from more than 100 journals. Produced by the American Theological Library Association.

Christian Periodical Index
The Christian Periodical Index, published by the Association of Christian Librarians, indexes more than 130 English language periodicals. With coverage of journals from 1976 to the present, Christian periodical Index contains over 200,000 records including both journal articles and reviews. The journals included in the database cover a broad spectrum of knowledge.  Christian Periodical Index covers all major doctrinal positions within evangelical Christianity.

Religion and Philosophy Collection
This database provides extensive coverage of such topics as world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. Religion & Philosophy Collection offers more than 300 full text journals, including more than 250 peer-reviewed titles, making it an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies. PsycARTICLES
PsycARTICLES is a definitive source of searchable full text articles on current issues in psychology. The database contains more than 130,000 searchable full text articles from 66 journals published by the American Psychological Association and from allied organizations. It contains all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each of journal. Coverage spans from 1984 to the present. Nearly all APA journals go back to Volume 1, Issue 1.

PsycINFO
PsycINFO, from the American Psychological Association, contains nearly three million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books and dissertations, all in the field of psychology, dating as far back as the early 1800s. Journal coverage, which spans from 1887 to present, includes international material selected from more than 2,000 periodicals in over 27 languages.

PsycBOOKS
PsycBOOKS, from the American Psychological Association, is a database of more than 21,000 chapters in PDF from over 1,500 books published by APA and other distinguished publishers. It also includes over 740 classic books of landmark historical impact in psychology dating from 1806, and the exclusive electronic release of more than 1,500 authored entries from the APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of Psychology. Furthermore, digitization of the content from the Archives of the History of American Psychology (AHAP) collection will add upwards of 2,500 works of historical significance.

PsycCRITIQUES
PsycCRITIQUES™,produced by the American Psychological Association, is a database of full-text book reviews featuring current scholarly and professional books in psychology. It also publishes reviews from a psychological perspective of popular films and trade books. PsycCRITIQUES includes nearly 40,000 reviews dating back to 1956.

PsycEXTRA
PsycEXTRA, produced by the American Psychological Association, is a bibliographic and full-text database of technical, annual and government reports, conference papers, newsletters, magazines, newspapers, consumer brochures and more. This database provides extensive coverage of gray literature relating to psychology and the behavioral sciences; it contains more than 120,000 records that are not indexed in any other APA database. Furthermore, content from the AHAP collection is expected to increase the number of records substantially.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection
This database provides coverage of nearly 600 full text publications, including more than 550 peer-reviewed journals. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods.  Full text information dates back to 1965.  This database is updated daily.
