Western Seminary is pleased to announce that our Portland campus will be hosting guest professor Dr. D.A. Carson come fall 2008 semester.
According to Dr. John E. Johnson, Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, some of the finest exposition in the world has been done by Carson. “Few can bring the same exegetical skills to a classroom. He will enable pastors to bring the heart of the Word to the hearts of the people.”
PTS 732I, Expository Preaching for Experienced Preachers, is designed for pastors who have been preaching for some time, and who want to improve their skills namely in the area of delivering timeless expository messages. Following a brief review of the basics of expositional preaching, the course will focus on matters that are sometimes overlooked. These topics may vary from the relevance of theological and historical disciplines to preaching to the manner in which one preaches Christ and the gospel from the whole Bible to competent cultural exegesis.
Carson is a respected exegete and has written or edited more than forty-five books, including commentaries on books of the Bible, the Sermon on the Mount, the Gospel of John, and books on prayer and suffering. His book, The Gagging of God: Christianity Confronts Pluralism (1996), won the 1997 Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion Book Award in the category of "theology and doctrine." He has also written books on free will and predestination from a generally compatibilist and Calvinist perspective. His book, Becoming Conversant with the Emerging Church : Understanding a Movement and Its Implications (2005) is an important book in the Emerging church discussion. Carson is an evangelical New Testament scholar and is currently Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.
