Course Description:

This course will be an introduction to the assessment and treatment of children ages 3 through 12 years of age.  1 hour elective.

 

Course Goals:

                1.  The student will learn how to make an initial assessment on children ages 3 through 12 years.

 

2.  The student will become familiar with DSM-IV diagnoses dealing with children ages 4 through

     12 years.

 

3.  The student will become familiar with Diagnostic Classification 0-3 dealing with children ages

     0  through 3 years.

 

4.  The student will learn how to develop appropriate treatment plans for children ages 3 through

     12 years.

 

Course Objectives:

                1.  Attendance at class sessions.

 

                2.  Participation in class discussions.

 

                3.  Completion of reading assignments.

 

                4.  Completion of assessment, diagnoses, and treatment papers.

Course Requirements:

 

1.  Attendance and participation.  (4 points per class, with point deduction for partial attendance, 28 points

     possible)

 

2.  Reading.  (4 points per completed reading assignment, 24 points possible.  Prep. time 18 hours, 816

     pages, familiarity reading, 45 pages/hour)

 

3.  Assessment, Diagnoses, and Treatment Papers.  (12 points per completed paper, 48 points possible.

     Prep. Time 2 – 3 hours/paper, 8 - 12 hours total)

 Students shall write four 1 to 1 1/2 page papers (please make sure to add an appropriate cover

 page including your box number).  The 1st part of the paper will include a 5 Axis diagnosis (with

 rule-outs on Axis I and Axis II if appropriate) of the child.  This is to include your reasons (ie,

 symptoms that match DSM-IV or Diagnostic Classification 0-3 diagnoses; results of testing) for

 giving that diagnosis.  It is also to include assessments that were done and/or could have been

done but may not have been done (ie, behavioral checklists, testing).  The 2nd part of the paper will

 be an appropriate treatment plan based on the Axis I diagnosis and if applicable the Axis II

 diagnosis. 

 

Grading:          

  100 - 95  =  A

   94  - 93  =  A-

   92  - 91  =  B+

   90  - 88  =  B

   87  - 86  =  B-

   85  - 84  =  C+

   83  - 81  =  C

   80  - 79  =  C-

   78  >      =  Less than satisfactory

           

                               Late assignments will result in a 2-point reduction per late assignment.
