Course Description

 

This course is designed for pastoral, para-church leaders and those presently leading and/or preparing to lead multi/intercultural teams.  Understanding self and the needs of other team members is critical to leading well, particularly inter-culturally.  Using the Birkman assessment tool, the leader is made to have a deeper understanding of how and why he operates the way he does and to identify the needs of his team members.  Participants will wrestle with concepts of leadership, introducing and managing change and leading biblically in intercultural teams.

 

 

Course Objectives

 

By the completion of this class, the student should be able to:

 

1.                  Explain what leadership is, have a clear grasp of a Leadership Development Model and be able to articulate its concepts clearly.

2.                  Be able to articulate what it means to be a ‘learning’ leader and to lead without operating from power.

3.                  Focus on developing character in addition to competencies in becoming authentic, learning leaders.

4.                  Have a basic understanding of the Birkman Method.

5.                  Have a clearer understanding of self and others in order to optimize the performance of the team.

6.                  Grasp the essentials of team building.

7.                  Explain the “hedgehog” concept.

8.                  Appreciate and articulate the different frames to view organizations.

9.                  Be capable of analyzing organizations / teams and determine methodologies for improving the leadership functions while maintaining cultural sensitivity.

10.             Be capable of introducing and managing change in the context of inter/multi-cultural settings.

 

 

 

Course Requirements

 

1.                  Careful completion of course readings with a one page reflection paper for each book and additional reading of at least 200 pages on related subject (choose from Selected Bibligraphy).

2.                  Involvement and active participation in all classes.

3.                  Completion of the Birkman Questionnaire prior to the start of classes.

4.                  Prepare 3 questions about the subject that you would like answered during the course.  These should be prepared with copies for distribution to the other class members and instructor on the first day of class.

5.                  A written evaluation of the leadership health of your ministry based on the lessons learned in class with your recommendations for improvement in a multi / intercultural setting.  (No more than 10 pages double-spaced)  Presentation to be made orally in class.

6.                  A written personal development plan.
