COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

I. PRE-COURSE ASSIGNMENT -- DUE MON June 7, 2004 at 8:00AM (13 points)

1. Choose EITHER Crabb OR Wilson for this assignment. After READing the book, write an essay (500 – 750 words) reflecting the author’s views as indicated below.

Connecting by Larry Crabb

Refer to Crabb’s chart on page 39. What is your understanding of what it means to “pour life into

another” and how could connecting be an effective means of healing?  Is there a time when it is

appropriate to focus on the “Stubborn will” and/or the “Psychological Damage?” If so, when. If

not, why not.  Show you understand Crabb’s perspective, summarize your perspective and close with the impact of these discoveries.

Into Abba’s Arms by Sandra D. Wilson

Respond in writing to these questions:

a)      Why do I have a hole in my soul?

b)      How can I get close to a God I can’t trust?

c) What style mask do I most closely identify with and why—relater’s or achiever’s? How can

I find and accept the real me?

Show you understand Wilson’s perspective, summarize your perspective and close with the impact of these discoveries.

2. Optional:  View The Horse Whisperer, available in video/DVD at most movie rental stores. Look for key elements that lead to the physical and emotional healing for a) Pilgrim and b) Grace.

II. IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT -- DUE  8:00 AM  June 8-11 TUES, WED, THURS, FRI. (12 points)

Journal Entries

Briefly reflect on EACH DAY’s topics in a journaling format. Submit one paragraph per topic, typed of course.  Please include feelings and thoughts that you experienced during the presentation and/or after class.  Putting your feelings and thoughts into words often clarifies and solidifies them.  Please also include questions raised, decisions or determinations made, as well as increased compassion.

III. POST CLASS ASSIGNMENTS -- DUE AUG 13 at noon (25 points)

Complete required reading

Reflection paper

Choose one of the 9 issues (listed in course description) to do further research and reflection

on. Follow the guidelines for written assignments under “Course Policies.”  This paper should

be 8-10 double-spaced pages in length.  Mediography should include a minimum of 400 pages read: books (excluding PCW512 required texts), periodicals or Internet sites.   Quotes and original ideas must be documented by foot or endnotes. The paper should be written from the prospective of someone ministering to a woman dealing with this issue. Include:

1)      Give a definition of this issue. Show a clear understanding of the behavior, feelings, and thoughts of such a woman experiencing this issue. Include background information—causes or reasons that might lead a woman into the pain of this issue (e.g. what might lead a woman to addictions, incarceration, spiritual abuse, etc.).

2)      Choose one primary Scriptural text that gives you the understanding you need to shepherd a

woman through the issue you have chosen for this assignment. Please identify the truth that this text brings to the issue and/or to your ability to shepherd more effectively. This is not necessarily a text you would give the women in pain, but is one primarily for YOU the shepherd.

3)      Give Do’s and Don’ts of someone ministering to a woman dealing with this issue.  What is the first step YOU will take when you suspect the cause of a woman’s pain is THIS issue?  What will you recommend she do?  What does recovery look like?  When should you refer her to a professional counselor? Give steps to recovery. From a biblical perspective how would you help her grieve losses and begin the transition to health? Include directives for someone ministering to another who is experiencing this specific pain.
