COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course deals with ESL curriculum planning and syllabus design: objectives, content, materials, procedures, and evaluation. It also deals with the locating, organizing, and developing of ESL teaching materials from various sources for different purposes.
 
 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, students are expected to 
      1)   gain an understanding of the interrelated factors and processes in curriculum 
development
2)      apply guidelines to design programs, syllabuses, and lesson plans
3)      apply guidelines to assess and adapt materials

SUPPLEMENTARY READING

J.D. Brown (1995). The Elements of Language Curriculum: A systematic approach to

 program development.  Heinle & Heinle.

Compilation of articles and book excerpts in a binder, available at the Seminary library.   

 

 
COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1.       Reading (10%)

      Read the assigned text and articles in preparation for class discussion.

 

2.       Reflective Notes (20%)

         Thoughts, comments, and questions on the required reading. The notes are to be

          recorded on a 3x5 card   and handed in daily at the beginning of each class session. 

 

3.       Text evaluation (35%)

          Select a commercially published ESL text book and evaluate it, using the

          guidelines discussed in class.      

 

4.      Unit Theme (See Sample) (35%)

Select a theme to meet the language needs of an ESL class/student.  Construct a teaching unit that includes the target language skills, methodology, and activities.
