 Course Description:

 

This course will focus on the problems and issues arising from values and assumptions that affect counseling with individuals and families of different ethnic origins.  2 hours

 

Course Goals:

 

    1.  To gain a broad understanding of issues raised in multicultural counseling.

 

    2.  To develop sensitivity to social, spiritual, psychological, and physical issues pertinent to

          a therapist working with ethnic minority clients.

 

    3.  To increase awareness of one’s own cultural worldview and how it affects social interactions.

 

    4.  To develop specialized knowledge about a particular culture.

 

    5.  To increase multicultural counseling skill awareness and technique.

 

Course Objectives:

 

     1.   Gain a broad understanding of issues through completion of required readings.

 

     2.   Develop sensitivity to issues through participation in classroom interactions.

 

     3.   Increase self-awareness by experiencing a cross-cultural community event.

 

     4.   Become knowledgeable about a specific culture through research and presentation.

 

     5.   Increase multicultural counseling skills by conducting a cross-cultural interview.

Course Requirements:

 

1.  Attendance.  (3 points per class, with point deduction for partial attendance, 21 points possible)

2.  Reading.  (2 points per completed reading assignment, 14 points possible) (Prep. time 20 hours)

3.  Cross-Cultural Experience Report.  (10 points possible)

     Students shall write a one page report describing their experience in attending a community function

     of  a specified ethnic group. Emphasis should be given to identifying differences in worldview

     and  cultural customs from the student’s own worldview and customs.  (Prep. time 5 hours)

 

4.  Cross-Cultural Interview.  (10 points possible)

     Students shall write a two page report of their experience in interviewing a person from a

     specified  ethnic group highlighting cultural information discovered.  The student should be

     familiar with basic information about the culture before conducting the interview.  The

     interview  should be taped and reviewed by the student prior to writing the report.  If

     appropriate, the student should ask for feedback from the interviewee for any cultural

     differences, information, or misunderstandings.  The student should obtain a signed

     release from the interviewee before beginning the interview.  (Prep. time 5 hours)

 

5.  Research Presentation.  (20 points possible)

      Students shall give a 10-15 minute presentation reviewing their research on a specific ethnic

      group.  The student is to provide the class with a 2 page (single-spaced) summary handout

      with a 1 to 2 page reference list attached, including citations of  10-20 articles published

      within the past five years.  Each student will also provide the instructor with copies of the

      two most important articles cited in the report.  The presentation and handout should

      include counseling techniques and considerations specific to the culture.

      (Prep. time 22 hours)

 

6.   Final Exam.  (25 points possible)  (Prep. time 7 hours)

 

 

Grading:

 

  100 - 95  =  A

   94  - 93  =  A-

   92  - 91  =  B+

   90  - 88  =  B

   87  - 86  =  B-

   85  - 84  =  C+

   83  - 81  =  C

   80  - 79  =  C-

   78  >      =  Less than satisfactory

             

  Late assignments will result in a 2-point per week reduction for each assignment.
