Catalogue description: A plan for the first years of service following seminary training is developed, involving a careful study of the geography, history, sociology, religions and church/mission activities in an intended area of service. This personal strategy integrates missiology, theological, and biblical studies, with the spiritual and physical needs of that particular area.
Objectives: The course is intended to give the student the opportunity to integrate seminary experiences with a focused, in-depth research into the country and anticipated area of ministry. The student will develop a syllabus, indicating how the time will be divided into research, reading and writing a major paper.
Assignment: Because there are no classroom hours, the student will utilize all of the 90 hours in reading, writing and research. There will be regularly scheduled meetings with the Professor by appointment.
The major product of the course will be a written research paper, appropriately footnoted, with a selected bibliography. The paper will be 6,000-10,000 words. It will cover the above topics, and will present a 5 year plan for ministry. It will be a document that the student will refer to from time to time, for guidance and information.
In addition to the paper, the student will write an annotated bibliography, which will serve as the basis for research that he/she may wish to undertake in the future. This will be long enough to contain information about the major books, articles, web sites and other material in that area of investigation.
Grading: The paper will be graded for form, content, thoughtful planning and completeness in covering the material. The length and detail of the annotated bibliography will also be considered in assigning the final grade.
