Purpose of the Seminar

This seminar provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students in intercultural studies to engage in educational planning within the context of their intercultural ministries.

Nature of the Seminar

The seminar is intended to be interactive. The assumption is that everyone has experiences, insights and discoveries which are worth sharing. The seminar will be also be reflective. You will be encouraged to interact critically with theological, missiological, cultural and educational issues raised through readings and projects. The instructor will function as a catalyst and a resource person.

Seminar Readings

Before the seminar, you are asked to prepare a summary and critique  (750-1250 words; 3-5 pages) of the following two texts:

  • Robert Banks, Reenvisioning Theological Education  (Eerdmans 1999), an exploration of a "missional" alternative to current models of theological education.

  • Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Continuum International 2002), the 30th Anniversary Edition of the classic work of an adult educator from northeast Brazil who developed a radical literacy program that not only taught adults to read but also, through a process of consciousness raising, empowered them to work for change within their own social contexts.

During the seminar, we will be reading and interacting with

  • A compilation of "Readings in Education and Mission", journal articles and chapters in books by Lois McKinney Douglas, Peter Chang and John Gration intended to stimulate reflection on a variety of intercultural education issues. For each reading, participants should prepare 1-3 critical questions for discussion during the seminar.  These readings are listed in our syllabus, and will be available in the seminary library, before and during the course.

  • Robert W. Ferris, ed., Establishing Missionary Training (William Carey Library 1995), a manual for developers of educational programs. This text will introduce the process of educational planning which will be used during the seminar. No outside preparation required.

Seminar Project

The major project for the seminar is to prepare an educational plan to be implemented in a formal setting, such as a theological school, or a nonformal setting, such as a church-based mission education program, or a community- based development program.

Your educational plan should include:

  • anticipated outcomes, goals, objectives
  • an outline of major topics or units to be included
  • a design for teaching/learning experiences
  • expectations of the participants
  • an evaluation of learning outcomes
  • dates/schedules/deadlines
  • specific plans for major topics or units which should include objectives, content outline, teaching activities, required readings and other expectations of the participants, recommended readings and optional activities, bibliographic and other resources for your own enrichment, and a provision for evaluation of teaching effectiveness

Criteria for the evaluation of your educational plan will include:

  • theoretical grounding in theology, missiology, culture and education
  • a clear description of the projected program
  • appropriateness of the plan for the intended learners
  • clarity and concreteness of your plan

(could someone else use it to teach your group?)

  • creative, interesting, motivating
