External students have many educational options from which to choose. For graduate credit, students may:

1. Take up to one-half of a Master of Arts program (30 hours) or two-thirds of the Master of Divinity program (approximately 60 hours) by external studies. This is ideal for those who desire to begin seminary studies while preparing to locate to one of Western’s campuses. (Courses are selected with degree advisor approval.)

2. Earn a Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies or Ministerial Studies. The equivalent of one full year of resident study, these graduate diplomas allow external students to earn significant recognition for work in theology and Bible. A diploma requires completion of 30 hours of study with a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average in the prescribed course of study. Courses taken toward these diplomas may apply to other Western educational programs. Students interested in such application should consult the Admissions Office before taking any CLL courses.

3. Earn a 16-hour Graduate Certificate in Intercultural Ministry or Pastoral Care to Women. These innovative multimedia programs prepare students for specialized ministry, particularly for those who may consider further study toward a Master’s degree in either area of study. Other 10-hour external study certificates focus their studies upon three specific content areas: Biblical Studies, Theological Studies and Church Ministries. Each certificate requires the successful completion of prescribed courses with a 2.5 grade point average. For more information about the Certificate in Pastoral Care to Women, please refer to the catalog description.

4. Complete Internet, CD ROM / Internet, video and audio courses on a course-by-course basis. Western Seminary courses address many of the most important areas of the Christian life and ministry preparation and will help any individual grow in grace and in truth. Christian school teachers in the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) should check with their local ACSI offices to ensure that CLL courses will satisfy certification requirements in Bible and professional studies.
