Western Seminary Master of Theology Th.M.

Master of Theology (Th.M.)

The Master of Theology degree program is the most advanced academic program offered at Western Seminary, offering advanced training and research in Biblical studies and theology for pastoral theologians who aim to convey the Gospel powerfully. The result is a training package that will prepare pastors, ministers, and educators with the knowledge base and research experience to lead the Church forward. Unlike many other seminaries, our Th.M. degree is not a four year degree, but rather a more specialized academic program that may be completed after completing a previous master's degree at a seminary. The flexibility of the Th.M. also provides an excellent preparation and credit transferability for future doctoral studies.

What Sets Western's Master of Theology Training Apart?

  • Half of our Th.M. graduates serve in pastoral roles, while the other half enter teaching roles, thanks to an emphasis on applying research to ministry practice.
  • Our faculty features high-caliber visiting professors like D.A. Carson, Thomas Schreiner, and Marc Cortez, complimenting an excellent assortment of Western faculty.
  • Blend elective courses with your choice of seminars in theology, New Testament, Old Testament, historical theology, biblical literature, and pastoral theology.
  • Our program utilizes a flexible design, which means that Th.M. students can complete their training with just 3-5 trips to the Portland campus.

Accessible Scheduling

The Master of Theology may be completed through 4- or 5-day intensive courses offered at Western Seminary Portland campus. Those who live at a distance may also utilize webcast and individualized study courses to complete nearly half of their studies, complemented by minimal trips to campus for intensive courses. This unique scheduling design means Th.M. students can complete their studies without leaving family, career, or ministry behind. This level of academic research will require that students have ready access to a theological or seminary library in their region.

Admission Requirements

  • A Master of Divinity degree or academic master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (must include coursework in Bible, Theology, and Church History)

If an applicant does not meet one of these requirements, we invite them to contact an enrollment counselor to explore alternative Master of Theology admission options.

Western is a place of great spiritual vitality and academic excellence. I was able to tailor my program so that it fully prepared me for my doctoral work in biblical studies. My time at Western was foundational for my career in higher education. I highly recommend it.
