Helpful Policy Reminders

Introduction

Individuals enrolled in an online course are Western Seminary students and are expected to comply with policies and standards as outlined in the seminary catalog.

In specific instances, the practices of distance education require that online campus policies be adapted to meet the specialized needs and circumstances of our students. To help you get started right in your distance learning course this summer, what follows is a brief summary of several of the most-frequently-asked policy areas.

Course Duration Students across the seminary system now have either 8 or 16 weeks, depending upon your session, to complete an online course. With your course materials we have included the specific start and end dates for your current course.
Course Refunds

For 16 week courses, students may drop, with written notice, an online course within the first 6 weeks from their course start date. For 8 week courses, you may drop, again with written notice, within the first three weeks of the start date. In either event, you will receive a prorated refund as follows:

Course Extensions

For 16 week courses, students may drop, with written notice, an online course within the first 6 weeks from their course start date. For 8 week courses, you may drop, again with written notice, within the first three weeks of the start date. In either event, you will receive a prorated refund as follows:

After the refund period, students must petition the registrar for permission to withdraw from the course. If approved, the student will receive a “W” on their transcript and no refund will be issued.

Course Extensions In accord with seminary catalog polices, students may receive one four-week course extension upon request and approval by the online campus. Continuing progress in the course must be demonstrated before a request for an extension will be considered.
Financial Aid Distance education students may be eligible for financial aid if they meet specific requirements. Please contact the Financial Aid office for more information.
