After almost 32 years, John Piper is transitioning away from his position as lead pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Transitions in pastoral leadership are never easy. And they’re even harder when you’re dealing with someone whose ministry has lasted as long and had as much influence as John Piper’s. The story of the church is riddled with many tragic failures in precisely this area. But that doesn’t mean it has to go badly.
This video is a fascinating inside look into how they have handled and are continuing to handle the transition at Bethlehem. I don’t think there’s one right way to manage pastoral succession, but there are still some interesting insights to glean here.
What do you think? Have you or a pastor that you know been through a transition like this? What went well and what didn’t?
