Learning Together program (for spouses of Western Seminary students)

Learning Together (LT)
(for spouses of Western Seminary students)

Student husband and wife, as partners in ministry, have the opportunity to learn together here at Western Seminary. Spouses are permitted to sit in on classes at no cost. Learning Together was established during the 1982-83 school year for the purpose of demonstrating our commitment to preparing couples for vocational ministry. The benefits should be obvious: husband and wife would have additional shared experiences, and the spouse's personal and ministry potential would be enhanced.

Guidelines for Learning Together (LT):
1. This program is limited to spouses of students in degree programs who are currently registered.
2. Permission of the instructor is required for attendance in a particular class.
3. There will be no charge for student spouses participating in this program.
4. LT enrollment will be limited to "space available," i.e., the difference between the maximum enrollment for a particular class and the number of "paying" enrollees. (LT students may be "bumped" by paying students who register late.)
5. There will be no academic credit given for attendance at classes under this program. (Students whose spouses are required by a mission board to take seminary classes should check with their board to see if this arrangement will meet their requirements.)
6. LT students should register in the Records Office prior to the start of class.
7. LT students should expect to attend every class session or nearly every class session since information and experiences gained in the class itself is the object of this program. If a student must "drop out", he/she should notify the records office ASAP
8. Participating in class discussions and out-of-class conferences with professors must be kept to a minimum. While it is recognized that these things have significant educational value, this is the only way we can make LT available at no charge.
9. Spouses are encouraged to do reading assignments, but they will not write papers or take quizzes, tests, etc.
10. Children must NOT be brought to class or left unattended in the library or elsewhere on campus.
11. The spouse is not limited to classes the paying student is taking. However, there are restricted courses, so please check with the records office before registering (503-517-1800) Generally, non-credit registrations are intended to provide foundational learning opportunities. Courses requiring prior learning, intense faculty involvement, or significant school resources are not intended for non-credit participants. These include, but are not limited to, counseling, homiletics, Greek or Hebrew language, coaching, ThM, and doctoral courses.
12. LT students may take up to 2 courses per semester.

Western Seminary is pleased to offer a variety of non-credit courses and programs to individuals who seek to participate in a course for personal growth. Please review the following information before submitting the Non-Credit Application & Registration form. We invite you to contact us if you have questions.

Other general Non-Credit Policies:
1. Graduate credit will not be awarded for non-credit participation in a course.
2. Individuals who have a bachelor’s degree will be registered with an audit status and may obtain a transcript of audited courses. Individuals without a bachelor’s degree will be registered with an enrichment status; transcripts will not be available due to accreditation requirements.
3. Western Seminary offers non-credit course participation as a special service at a significantly discounted rate. Non-credit participants are not required to do the coursework required for graduate students; likewise, the instructor is not obligated to, and may not, review assignments voluntarily completed by a non-credit participant. To facilitate learning, the seminary strongly encourages non-credit participants to complete course reading.
4. Participation in class discussions and out-of-class conferences with the instructor should be kept to a minimum. Please note that PCW courses are an exception; class participation is encouraged in those courses.
5. Individuals who wish to take a non-PCW course on a Western Seminary campus must verify qualification for graduate studies either through indicating an undergraduate degree or ministry involvement. Those who are not graduate-qualified may not be approved for admission or registration.
6. Non-credit registrations are intended to provide foundational learning opportunities. Courses requiring prior learning, intense faculty involvement, or significant school resources are not intended for non-credit participants. These include, but are not limited to, counseling, homiletics, Greek or Hebrew language, ThM and Doctoral courses.
7. In courses where seating is limited, credit students will be granted priority.
8. Individuals may register for no more than two non-credit courses per semester, and only those that are designated as available for audit on the official class schedule.
