THEOPHILUS COHORT

FLEXIBLE FACE-TO-FACE MINISTRY TRAINING

Coming January 2018

Theophilus is a new cohort at Western Seminary that offers advanced, flexible, face-to-face ministry training. It serves ministry students in a condensed format, requiring 24 days of your life — coming to class once a month for two years.

The 24 credits of courses you complete in the Theophilus Cohort apply to either the Master of Divinity, M.A. (Biblical and Theological Studies), or M.A. in Ministry and Leadership. We are only accepting a limited number of students and the cohort is filling up fast.

The biblical character Theophilus is somewhat of a mystery. We don't know where he was from or what he did, and he is only mentioned twice in the New Testament (Luke 1:3; Acts 1:1). We do know that Luke wrote to Theophilus so that he might have certainty of the things he had been taught (Luke 1:4) and we know that his name means "lover or friend of God".

At Western Seminary, we believe in the goal of training God-lovers. But how is one to accomplish this task? The Theophilus Cohort has identified three unique ways to do this:

DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH PRESENCE

Divider

There are many ways to form learning communities, but this cohort leverages the power of gathering together in person. Education is more than just the transfer of information, and human beings are more than just their brains; we were created with bodies. Education is more than just good content; you need modelers not just messengers. Part of training for ministry means getting together and sharpening one another as we are conformed to the image of Christ.

CERTAINTY THROUGH COMMUNITY

Divider

Like Luke, we are convinced that to do ministry there needs to be a certainty about the faith delivered once for all to the saints. Part of this comes through engaging with texts in community. A small and constant community of your classmates will interact with Scripture and important secondary sources as you progress at the same pace through the cohort program. Plan on making friends for life and ministry.

EDUCATION FOR VOCATION

Everyone in the cohort will be in some sort of leadership position in a local ministry context. While the cohort will be advanced, it will also always have an eye on the practical. Because being together is a often a challenge for those in ministry, we’ve created a program schedule that allows you to stay in your ministry context, while also getting that “together” component.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Divider

Can I become a Theophilus student if I've already started my degree?

Sorry. The Theophilus Cohort is only for new, incoming Western Seminary students.

What degree do these classes apply to?

These classes apply to these master's degree programs at Western Seminary:

How would I complete my degree if I did the cohort?

You may complete the remainder of your chosen degree through Hybrid courses, other residential classes, or online courses.

In the event that we add a third year to the cohort schedule, you will complete a total of 36 credits through with the Theophilus Cohort.

How is the Theophilus Cohort different from the other programs?

The cohort is not a degree program itself, but a scheduling and learning option that allows you to complete a core set of courses that are applicable to several master's degree programs. It involves advanced study, meets only once a month, and builds community with a constant set of in-ministry classmates who complete seminar-style classes.

Can I receive advanced standing if I am part of the cohort?

You can only receive advanced standing credit for classes outside of the cohort format, as the cohort completes a more challenging and focused set of classes.

Why is the third year listed as "possible"?

We are only asking you for a two-year commitment, but if there is enough student interest we will continue into a third year as a cohort.
