16th Century Torah Donated to Western!

16th Century Torah Donated to Western!

Thanks to the generosity of Ken and Barbara Larson, Western has been gifted a 16th century Torah. The vellum scroll measures 75 ft. long and originated in a Yemenite community. The scroll consists of 61 panels of prepared and refined calfskin, with 187 columns containing the first five books of the Bible in their entirety. Notations regarding translation that have been made throughout the life of the scroll can be seen in the margins.

The scroll will be housed in a glass viewing room (also donated by the Larsons) located in the library of Western's Portland campus. All are welcome to come view and study it.
