A Defining Moment
"When I was a student at Western Seminary, my wife and I managed an apartment complex (52 units!) halfway between campus and downtown Portland. I parsed Hebrew verbs and wrote theology papers in the morning. Then, in the afternoon and evening, I replaced hot water heaters, cleaned the laundry rooms, and responded to tenant complaints. This experience taught me how to love and serve lost people. I interacted daily with tenants who dealt with unfaithful spouses, domestic abuse, drug problems, and unwanted pregnancies. Their brokenness was overwhelming. I had to rely on the power of the gospel like never before. I still refer to this apartment complex as the “other seminary.” It grounded me, providing a context to learn to be a pastor. It showed me my own brokenness and how I could do nothing apart from Christ."
