Northern California Local Library Resources

Many students find using an academic or public library closer to home more convenient for their studies. Click on a library listed below for useful information about borrowing policies.

If seeking books not held by Western’s library, students are encouraged to use the LINK feature on the Sacramento Public Library’s catalog. Books can be requested from numerous libraries from across the state with an easy interlibrary loan feature. Please see your librarian if you have questions or need assistance.

American River College  (Sacramento)

American River College does not extend borrowing privileges to people who are not enrolled in the Los Rios Community College District. Western students may use the collection in-house.

California State University  (Sacramento)

CSUS gives library cards to community borrowers who live in the Sacramento area and show a valid photo I.D. and a second proof of address (check, utility bill, car registration). Community Borrowers may check out 15 items at a time for a $50 yearly fee.

Cosumnes River College  (Sacramento)

Students must use this collection in-house.

Folsom Lake College

Community borrowers can borrow Folsom Lake College resources by becoming Friends of the Library. Regular membership is $30 per year. FLC alumni pay $15 per year. In addition, students have on-campus access to online resources.

Graduate Theological Union  (Berkeley)

Residents of California may purchase a Community Patron borrowing card. To purchase a card, bring a picture ID that states your California address. Community Patron cards cost $40 for three months, $80 for six months, or $145 for 12 months. 

Sacramento City College

Members of the community may purchase a Special Borrowers Card ($30 per year) that will allow them limited borrowing privileges. Without the Special Borrowers card, members of the community may still use library materials within the library, including the public-access computers if available (students have priority) .

Sacramento Public Library System

Any person who maintains a permanent address in California may apply for a Sacramento Public Library card. There is no fee to acquire a card. To obtain a card, apply online and pick up your card at your local branch library. Bring a photo ID and proof of address.

One card is issued per person and may be used at any Sacramento Public Library location, as well as libraries in Colusa County , the city of Folsom, Sutter County , and the city of Woodland .

Sierra College  (Rocklin)

Community borrowers can borrow up to 3 Sierra College resources by becoming Friends of the Library. Regular membership is $35 per year.

University of California  (Davis)

Community members can apply for a borrowing card for $60.

University of Nevada  (Reno)

Community borrowers can obtain access to the UNR collection by joining the Friends of the Library. The fee is $25 per year for Nevada residents and $50 per year for out-of-state residents.

University of the Pacific  (Stockton)

Community members may use the library for a $50 annual fee.

Washoe County Library System  (Reno)

Nevada residents and California residents who live in El Dorado, Lassen, Placer, Plumas, Nevada, or Sierra counties may apply online for a library card. There is no fee to acquire a card. Bring a photo ID with a correct address to pick up your card.

William Jessup University  (Rocklin)

Western Seminary Sacramento students may purchase a special borrower’s card ($50 annual fee) that will allow limited borrowing privileges of up to 3 items at a time.
